High Voltage Plate TransformerHigh Voltage Plate Transformers are rectifier transformers that supply power to the plate of a high power tube. Due to decreasing demand, they are in danger of becoming a lost art, except at Power Magnetics! Being high voltage devices, they require an expertise in dielectric engineering that PMI has achieved through a combination of knowledge of dielectric fundamentals, physics and considerable manufacturing experience. High Voltage Plate Transformers are subject to high operating as well as transient voltage stresses that must be properly designed for. All High Voltage Plate Transformers are engineered to be substantially corona free, which promotes a long trouble free life. Another hallmark of the High Voltage Plate Transformers is vacuum impregnation (VPI). By fully impregnating the coil with varnish it guarantees better moisture resistance, higher mechanical strength and cooler operation temperatures that result in a longer life. Scott ConnectionThe Scott or “T” connection is another way of saying that the unit is designed for 3-2Ø operation. In the case where the load is divided equally into (2) zones, this connection results in a balanced 3Ø line current.

Globar™Silicon carbide heating elements have the characteristic that their resistance increases as the elements age. So unless the voltage to the element can increase, the power (and temperature of the furnace) will drop. The transformer thus has taps that can be utilized to boost voltage (usually no more than 100%). Almost always the kVA of the transformer will be greater than the kW of the load. As a result of increasing resistance the element will have to be run at the next higher voltage tap, which translates into more kVA.
